About Us
The Sugarloaf Frostie is a family business with a history rooted in tradition and serving the community. In 1968 from a wagon on the side of Route 116 in Sunderland, Alec and Frances Kulessa began selling potatoes and produce from their farm. As word spread and travelers kept visiting their wagon for fresh produce, the couple expanded. The Kulessa’s built the building that customers recognize today and the Kulessa’s started to offer beverages and ice cream, and then burgers and hot dogs. What began as a simple farmstand grew into cherished summertime treat in the Pioneer Valley.
The business has always been in the Kulessa family. Peter and Darlene Kulessa took over the Sugarloaf Frostie decades ago, and as of 2026 are hanging up their aprons to enjoy retirement in New Hampshire. Their niece, Julie Kulessa, along with her husband, Rick Strong, purchased the business and are ready to serve the Pioneer Valley for another summer. Julie grew up at Sugarloaf Frostie - she celebrated birthdays at Sugarloaf Frostie and worked the counter for years throughout high school and college. Rick brings his own culinary background to the Frostie as a chef and former owner of 10 Bridge Street Cafe and Restaurant in Shelburne Falls.
The classics will stay on the menu and the ice cream will continue to come from Maple Valley Creamery in Hadley. Julie and Rick are committed to keeping the Frostie exactly what it has always been: a place run with love and a treat for families in the Pioneer Valley.
